20201030 Maid Hotel and Bravo TURN: Chad

Something a bit different this week. It was Chad's turn to choose and we were nearly going to go to Richard's place but ended up going to the run-down looking hotel on the corner of Payneham and Magill Roads. The front facade of the hotel has had scaffolding up for years. It looks really run down and scruffy.

But we were in for a treat. When we parked the car in the car park off Magill Road, it led to a newer extension to the pub. Inside it was decorated well and had a modern feel to it. Chad had booked a table for 6 (Albert didn't end up coming) so it was just the 5 of us. Richard turned up at 6.52 on the dot as predicted :-)

It was standard pub fare tonight - nothing special.

Chad and Richard had the burger and beer deal - $20 (a bargain) - Chad gave a 7 Richard a 6

Con had the grilled fish and chips (and an extra fish from me) - 6

Stephen - chicken schnitzel with pepper sauce - 5

Elizabeth - crumbed fish and chips with mushroom sauce - 8

I couldn't believe the serving size of my fish and chips - 3 large pieces of fish with a large mushroom sauce. The fish was delicious. Although I did suffer a bit of tummy bloating later that night.

Chad bought a glass of West End and shared it with Con and Stephen. Stephen still remembers why he doesn't drink it because of the bitter aftertaste. Although it was better than they first remembered it.

The restaurant wasn't very busy considering it was a Friday night. The outside facade would put a lot of people off going I would say, which is a shame because it has a certain buzzy feel to the place.

We went to Bravo for a coffee and cake afterwards. We found a table inside for 6 which was perfect. We had gone to Buongiorno but could only find an outside seat so we decided to head for Bravo.

Stephen had the chocolate cake. Con had a monte carlo biscuit. Chad had the Mango Cheesecake. Richard had the lemon curd muffin. They had left the muffin in the microwave and forgotten about it until I asked them about it. No dramas. It's surprising how quiet Bravo is compared to Buorngiorno.

20201023 Rain and Buongiorno TURN: Elizabeth

It was supposed to be my turn this week but by Thursday I hadn't thought of anything, so I let Stephen choose for me. He choose the restaurant Rain in Norwood. An Asian Fusion cafe with thai, chinese and other asian dishes.

We met at the Bath hotel because we couldn't book a table at the Norwood hotel. The Bath Hotel was nice enough. We had a large round table near the entrance and also more importantly near the bar. The Furphy prices were great too - $7.50 for an imperial pint.

Con, Chad and Albert rocked up and Albert bought a bowl of wedges. Far too much food just before going to eat. No wonder I don't eat all my main meal.

I have to give a call out to the toilets in the Bath Hotel. There is literally no sink, just a surface. The tap splashes everywhere then the water runs backwards towards a narrow slit in the back. Very messy and not very functional at all.

We went to Rain and sat near the entrance. The only problem with it is that it was drafty every time the door opened because it wouldn't close properly.

Con - Combo Laksa with Hokkein noodles (cascade beer)- 5

Albert - Combo Laksa with Rice noodles (pineapple juice)- 7

Elizabeth - Snapper yellow thai curry and rice (lemon lime and bitters) - 5

Stephen - Seschuan chicken and rice (glass of shiraz) - 7

Chad - Kangaroo curry and rice - 8

We went to Buongiorno after for coffee and dessert. Chad had the Italian hot chocolate - and proof that he ate it all. Stephen had an apple crumble cheesecake and Albert had banana cake. I couldn't eat any more after the meal (which I left half of). The potatoes were barely cooked in my curry and the taste was a bit too overwhelming.

20201016 Midnight Spaghetti and Steven Ter Horst TURN: Stephen

Stephen - Ragu and shared Truffle spuds 8

Richard - Ragu and greens - 7.5

Elizabeth - Midnight Spaghetti (shared truffle spuds) - 8

Con - Midnight Spaghetti - 6

Chad - Cimi Di Rapa - 9

Richard was seeing the Adelaide Film Festival movies and had asked if we could meet in town for this week.

We started off at the Elephant. I can't remember too much now because I'm writing this a couple of weeks later. Going to the Elephant is still a novelty after the long period of absence. We always manage to find a table there even though they don't take any bookings.

Midnight Spaghetti didn't disappoint. We had the same wonderful meals. Chad went out on a limb and tried something different and loved it! I couldn't finish all my meal so Chad helped me out too. I love coming to Midnight Spaghetti.

We went to Steven Ter Horst afterwards and sat by the door to the right of the doorway. It was a bit squishy but all good. We had our usual hot chocolate drinks. If I recall correctly Chad had something a bit different tonight. All in all, another great evening. I have learnt my lesson to not leave the writing of the blog until so late in future. Stay safe everyone!

20201009 Cafe Michael 2 & Brunelli TURN: Richard

We met at the iconic Elephant only 7 months after COVID 19 shutdown. It had supposedly been renovated but I couldn't tell what exactly had been done to the place. Stephen and I scored a table by the front door and not long afterwards Albert rocked up followed by Con then Richard. Chad was last to join us. Albert had bought a bowl of chips with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce.

Whew!! Back to the Young Henry's jugs! Yeay! Now $15 per jug they're slowly getting more pricey but still cheaper than buying 2 separate imperial pints.

Richard had booked for 7pm at Cafe Michael. He went down early whist Con was finishing his beer. We arrived there to the familiar Harris Scarf plates on the table and large plastic Coca Cola bottle filled with water.

The menus were new in that they were hooked at the top corner of the page with Banquets on the first page. This attracted Stephen and Albert's attention.

The Banquet consisted of the following: Vegetarian spring rolls, chicken wings, Tum Yum Prawns soup, green chicken curry, phad Thai, jasmine rice.

Stephen, Albert and Con all shared a bottle of wine - $30 so $10 each.

  • Stephen - Banquet 1 - 8
  • Albert Banquet 1 - 8
  • Con - Beef green curry and rice - 7
  • Richard, Tom Kha Gai chicken, jasmine rice and chilli chicken - 7
  • Chad - Egg hokkein noodles with chicken, cheesecake spring rolls with icecream - 8
  • Elizabeth - Prawn laksa - half spring roll from Stephen - 4 gluggy (I only ate prawns and left soup)

Albert took a doggy bag home with him. Stephen had ate too much and was bursting and couldn't eat the rest of his meal.

I paid $67 and Chad paid his share and Con gave $32 to Albert in cash. Richard had a meal owed to him by Albert and had a $33.60 meal. That left Albert to pay the balance of $111. Albert questioned the amount and felt he was overcharged.

We went to Brunelli for coffees where Richard paid for all of us for a coffee. Thank you Richard. He looked over the bill and realised that Con underpaid by $4 but other than that the bill was right.

We talked about general stuff before heading home. We gave Con a lift to Buorngiorno.
